Neuropsychology: understanding in order to move forward

Brain damage can affect memory, attention, behaviour, and the way a person feels and relates to others.

At the Neurorehabilitation Clinic, we offer a specialized neuropsychology service to support both patients and their families throughout this process.

What do the sessions involve?

The process begins with a comprehensive and individualized assessment of the patient’s cognitive, emotional and behavioural abilities. This evaluation includes:

  • Standardized tests
  • Interviews with the patient and family
  • Specialized clinical assessment

After analyzing the results, we develop a personalized neuropsychological rehabilitation program, with the aim of enhancing preserved abilities and restoring affected skills, in order to recover the highest possible level of functioning.

What difficulties can neuropsychology treat?

Some common changes after brain injury that we address in our sessions include:

  • Attention: difficulty concentrating, following conversations, or noticing stimuli on one side of space (hemineglect).
  • Memory: problems remembering recent or past events, difficulty learning new information.
  • Executive functions: disorganization, difficulty planning, making decisions or adapting to new situations.
  • Perception (gnosias): difficulty interpreting visual, auditory or tactile information. In some cases, the patient is not aware of their own limitations.
  • Behaviour: personality changes, impulsivity, apathy or maladaptive behaviours that were not present before the brain injury.

A human and scientific approach

Neuropsychology is a discipline that combines scientific rigor with the empathy needed to support each person through a difficult time. In our individual sessions, the focus is always on improving quality of life, regaining autonomy, and facilitating easier and more understanding family relationships.

Emotional support

Suffering a brain injury (such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury) can cause emotional, behavioural and cognitive changes that lead to frustration, insecurity or confusion. These changes can affect both the patient and their close environment. For this reason, our neurologically specialized psychologists have the best strategies and skills to support both the patient and their family at an emotional level.
